Hand Tool Information Guide


Quality hand tools: are a must for every home and workshop. Whether you’re a master craftsman or simply need to tackle household projects, you’ll discover a wide selection of new hand tools. Tools that can be used in your home or garage to help in repairing, the house, your automobile, or bike whether it is a Harley Davidson or 21 speed mountain bike. Many projects will require a tool of some sort. 

Ball peen hammers: Ball peen hammers are for heavy-duty jobs, inappropriate for standard nail hammering. They feature a rounded ball on one end—good for shaping rounded surfaces—and a flat peen on the other end for pounding metal and rounding over rivets (called peening).

Sledgehammers: Sledgehammers are heavy-duty, two-handed hammers used largely for demolition such as breaking drywall or straighten automobile frames when smaller hammer won’t.

 Body & Fender Hammers: Body & Fender hammers are tempered steel hammers that are shaped to help you remove dents from sheet metal. They come in many different shapes with a rounded or flat head to help you shape or straighten your metal. There are Body dolly’s that are shaped pieces tempered steel that are different shapes to help mold the metal. There are different styles of hammers and Doll’s Curved dolly, utility dolly, double end hand dolly, shrinking dolly Standard bumping hammer, pick and finish hammer, reverse curve hammer, Cross Chisel Hammer, Dinging Spoon Dolly Block. They should always be used with Safety Glasses.

Soft-face hammers: Soft-face hammers , also called mallets, feature plastic, rubber, wood or brass pounding surfaces for driving chisels or applying force to delicate surfaces.

Punch & Chisel Set: Punches & Chisels are made of Heat-treated and tempered steel. They are made to remove, align or transfer by tapping or hammering. They come in Pin sets, Alignment Punch Set, Transfer Punch Set and Brass so they don’t mar or damage. Chisel set are made of Heat-treated and tempered steel, to cut through metal or wood. They have a sharp cutting edge and can be struck with a hammer or mallet. They should always be used with Safety Glasses.

Pry Bar: Pry bars are made of Heat-treated and tempered steel to help you get better leverage. They come in different styles Bent Nose, Curved Blade, Straight End, Dia Pry Bar / Jimmy Bar. They are made to pry and pull with but are not Screwdrivers.
Screwdrivers: Screwdrivers feature alloy-steel shanks, grit-blasted tips, nickel-chrome finishes, and sturdy plastic handles. Common screwdrivers feature a slotted tip or a Phillips tip.                                
Slotted screwdrivers: Slotted screwdrivers have a straight, tapered tip that fits either slot on a matching screw top.

Multi-tip screwdrivers: Multi-tip screwdrivers have interchangeable tips allowing convenient tip changes for different applications that can be removed or replaced with a different style or type.

Torx: Torx have a unque six point tip.They are becomming more populer with the Automotive Industry. They come in individual tips, screwdrive rhandle, tee-handel or socket type.

Hex; Hex are six sided wrenches.Also known as an Allen wrench but it is the brand name. They come in individual tips, screwdriver handle, tee-handel or socket type.

Square: Square means just that it has four sides. Meant to be used with power tools it is mostly used in construction.

Phillips screwdrivers: Phillps screwdrivers Named after inventor Henry F. Phillips, Phillips screwdrivers have a pointed cross-head tip that matches a self-centering, cross-head screw top.

Scraper:  Scrapers are made to remove gasket material, inspection stickers, dealer price labels and paint from glass. Most with single-edge razor blade or a heat-treated alloy steel to stay sharp.

Files: Files are made to remove material by hand. They come in a verity of sizes, shapes, Single Cut, double cut (or bastard), Flat, Round, Triangular, square. They should be used with a File Handles and a file card (a wire brush) helps keep your files sharp.

Picks & Awls: Picks & awls have tips that are hardened to stay sharp. They are made to help you quickly removes and installs "O" rings and seals. And for use in a variety of applications that can include marking metal, punching holes and gaskets, washers and other small parts.
Wrenches: Wrenchs tighten and loosen threaded fasteners, such as nuts, bolts, and screws, and have a plethora of uses. There are five common varieties of wrenches:

Crescent wrenches: Crescent wrenches, named for their crescent-moon shape, feature an open end and two gripping surfaces. The common name is Open End Adjustable wrench. Crescent wrench is a brand name.

Box wrenches: Box wrenches feature an enclosed end that grips the nut on every side. They are available in either 6- or 12-point varieties.

Combo wrenches: Combo wrenches have two equally sized wrench ends: one a box enclosure, the other a crescent shape open end to slide over the fasteners, nuts, bolts, and screws that you can’t get the box end around. 

Adjustable wrenches: Adjustable wrenches feature adjustable wrench heads for different-size nuts and bolts. Some adjustable wrenches, such as Pipe wrenches, Strap & Chain can be rocked back and forth to increase their grip without requiring excessive torque..
Strap & Chain wrench: Strap & Chain wrenchs feature adjustable wrench heads that are Urethane-covered, high strength belting attached to lightweight handle or a chain. Strap wrenches when used under normal conditions, will not scratch, damage or deform polished pipe and fittings, plastic pipe and fittings, oil and water filters, glass pipe, PVC conduit, and polished shafts Also works on alternator belts, flywheels, and propeller assemblies .Chain wrenches wraps around most any shape... round, square, hexagon, octagon. They have a tendency scratch and dig into your project. They can be rocked back and forth to increase their grip.

Offset wrenches: Offset wrenches extend their crescent or box a half-inch of the wrench end to accommodate the user's knuckles.

Crows Foot wrench: Crows Foot Wrenchs are special open-ended wrench to be used with a ratchet to get into places the others won’t reach.
Flare nut wrench: Flare nut wrenchs are an open-ended wrench that wraps 2/3 of the way around the nut and is used for air conditioning, fuel and hydraulic line, brass fittings on fuel lines.

Pliers: Pliers are versatile tools used for clamping, cutting, prying, and twisting. The most common varieties are the slip-joint, needle-nose, and locking.

Slip-joint pliers: Slip-joint pliers or tongue & Groove have adjustable square jaws for grabbing different-size objects. The standard kind has two settings, while Tongue and Groove slip-joints have several settings, opening as wide as 4 or 5 inches.

Needle-nose pliers: Needle-nose pliers have a long tapered nose for clamping items in tight spaces or if you have to reach for it.

Specialty pliers: Specialty pliers are pliers that are design for special application and they come as Hose Clamping, Fencing Tool, Crimping Tool With Cutter, Oil Filter, Hog Ring, Wire Stripping, Wire Twister, Snap Ring, Retaining Ring.

Locking pliers: Locking pliers can be locked around an object and act as a wrench, a pair of pliers, or to grip and hold onto an object. They come Needle-Nose, Curve-Jaws, C-Clamp, Chain Clamp, Bent Nose, Auto Clamp, Welding Clamp, Pinch-Off Tool, and Wire Cutter. Vise Grip is a brand name.

Snips-Aviation: Aviation snips have the ability to cut sheet metal using compound leverage. They come as straight and left or right curve cutting ability.

 Ratchet and socket sets: Ratchets are an alternative to wrenches. A single ratchet can be fitted with multiple sockets for varying size nuts and bolts. Sockets also feature spring-locking bearings, so that only forward torque can be applied to a nut, increasing the socket's grip without stripping the nut. Ratchets come in drive sizes 1/4", 3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4”, 1” and with flexible heads, Spinner Speed Handle,Breaker Bar. Sockets and Socket sets come in Fractional sizes, Standard, Metric increments, Shallow, Deep, 6 Point, 12 Point, Flex, Thin Walled and Impact.

Adapter, Universal & Extension: Adapters allows greater flexibility for all your sockets and drive tools. They allow you to shift from one drive to another. You can shift drives from larger to smaller or smaller drives to larger sockets drives. Universal are swivels that allow better access to hard-to-reach fasteners. The ball swivel allows the socket to turn freely without binding and up to a 30° flex angle provides improved access. Extension extends ratchet from fastener for more freedom of ratchet movement. They come in all ratchet drives sizes and various length. Some are for hand held ratchets others are for air impact wrenches (Power Tools)   

Torque Wrench: Torque wrenches not to be mistaken for an open-end or box end wrench, this wrench comes in drives sizes like a ratchet. This tool measures the torque that a nut or bolt is required to have. Torque wrenches have a scale either Dual analog or micrometer- type to set it to the proper adjustment they range from 4 inch pound to 600 foot pounds.
Flaring Tool: Flaring tools forms precise flares in copper, aluminum, and steel tubing to provide flare for brake and fuel lines. They can make either or single and double flares.
